Tom Keogh, Seattle Times, May 22, 2014 Guest Speaker Marjorie Agosin, daughter of Jewish parents who fled Europe and settled in Chile, is an award-winning Chilean author, poet, and professor. Agosin focuses on social justice, feminism, and remembrance. She is an activist and spokesperson for women?s rights in Third World countries. Her numerous honors and awards for writing and work as a human rights activist include a Jeanette Rankin Award in Human Rights, the Letras de Oro Prize for Poetry, the Latino Literature Prize, and a United Nations Leadership Award for Human Rights. The Chilean government honored her with a Gabriela Mistral Medal for Lifetime achievement. Agosin is the Luella LaMer Slaner Professor in Latin-American studies and a professor of Spanish and Latin-American literature at Wellesley College.
